Ministry of Public Works Breaks Ground for the Rehabilitation of Community Gravel Roads in Three Counties
- Commits To Enhancing Pliability of all Roads Including Primary, Secondary, & Feeder Roads
Monrovia, Liberia, March 20, 2025: The Ministry of Public Works holds a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the rehabilitation of community gravel roads in Montserrado, Margibi, and Bomi Counties. The initiative as mentioned, is part of GOL’s commitment to alleviate difficulties experienced during travels. Too often than not, past governments have largely focused on major roads with little attention given to community roads that directly affect the everyday Liberians.
Interestingly, the government through the Ministry of Public Works, has earmarked sixty-three (63) communities across the three counties mentioned supra covering one-hundred three (103) kilometers of roads to be rehabilitated. A total of two-hundred thirty-eight (238) culverts are to be installed across different communities during the course of the project.
Phase one of the project which begins effectively as of tomorrow, March 21,2025, will cover twenty-eight (28) communities comprising of eighteen (18) roads with a total of forty-two (42) kilometers. Additionally, a total of one-hundred (100) culverts are to be installed while sixty-three (63) existing culvert lines are to be cleaned ahead of the rainy season to avoid flooding, as bad waste handling by community dwellers have clogged most of the drainages thus becoming the source of flooding.
Gracing the occasion, Community Chairpersons embraced the welcoming news from the Ministry of Public Works. They thanked the President for his steadfast commitment to infrastructural development that currently stands at an enviable feat. The community leaders vowed to aid in the protection of materials & equipment that will be used, while at the same time committing to making contributions to road workers with food items where necessary.
Deputy Minister for Technical Services, Prince D. Tamba, in a remark, assured the communities that all technical details will be rigorously followed to ensure the best possible quality. “As the Technical Minister, I will be working with the contractors to ensure that every technical detail is followed to ensure quality output”, he remarked.
For his part, the Minister of Public Works, Roland Layfette Giddings, extended profound appreciation to his team at the Ministry, adding that all of these development projects would not be possible without the collective input of the team. He furthered that for this project to be possible and to the extent of its sustainability, the “COMMUNITIES” have to commit themselves to helping to protect government’s investments by reordering their approach to waste management, seeing it as a business for empowerment rather than the current mishandling that simply jeopardizes the health of the dwellers. Minister Giddings also assured community leaders at the occasion that the government is working out modalities to ensure that paved road reaches Maryland County within the next three (3) years. “Beyond this project, you can be assured that within the next three years, Maryland County will experience paved road”, the Minister intimated. In the same vein, he informed the communities that contractors have a strict mandate to only hire community dwellers, as it is part of ways to empowering the locals.
The Minister, however, thanked other dignitaries for being present—notably the District Representative Samuel Enders, Minister of Youth & Sports Cole Bangarlu and team, Community Chairpersons, and the Liberia Media for Democratic Initiative (LMDI).
